Get Your BMW Ready for Winter Weather

Here are Our Top Tips for Making Sure Your Car is Set to Survive the Season

New England enjoys some of the most beautiful weather in the world, including the unique joys of winter. Whether you're the type to take pleasure in exploring Amherst's snow-covered streets or prefer to sip a cup of tea while a winter storm rages outside, one thing remains true. The extreme temperatures and difficult road conditions can do terrible things to your car if you don't take precautions before winter sets in.

These are Five Essential Steps to Winterizing Your BMW

  • First and foremost, check your engine oil and other essential fluids like wiper fluid and antifreeze to make sure that they're clean and topped off throughout the season. Old fluids have a much harder time properly lubricating moving parts when the temperature drops, and the last thing you want is for sludge-filled oil to cause engine problems.
  • Give serious thought to buying a set of winter tires and mounting them on inexpensive steel rims to use during the winter. Since winter tires are specifically made to withstand the temperature drops and varying road conditions associated with winter, while steel rims hold up better to loose impediments and road salt.

Then, when winter's over, you can simply switch back to your regular tires and attractive alloy wheels. Of course, you'll want to check the tread and tire pressure throughout the winter, just to make sure you're enjoying maximum traction on Springfield MA roads at all times.

  • Take a good look at your wipers. You use them more during the winter months than at any other time of year, so you don't want to get caught with stiff or cracked wipers reducing your ability to see down the road.
  • Examine your battery, wiring, and vehicle lights closely before winter, and then at regular intervals throughout the season. Extreme temperatures can quickly kill off a weakened battery, and you want to make sure that your electrical system is operating fully in the low winter light.
  • Once it's snowed in Chicopee, and then every snowfall afterwards, take some time and walk around your vehicle to brush off any snow, ice, or dirt that may have gathered on the SAV's windshield, windows, roof, or lights. While you may not think this is worth the time or effort, there's no sense in risking your visibility by letting snow or ice accumulate.
